Garage Gothic Typeface Exploration – Editorial Design
Role: Designer | Researcher
Tools: Adobe InDesign | Adobe Photoshop | Typography | Print Design
This project focused on the typographic and cultural exploration of Garage Gothic, a grotesque sans-serif typeface designed by Tobias Frere-Jones. Drawing inspiration from gritty urban design—specifically, the typography found on garage parking tickets—Garage Gothic gained mainstream recognition through its use in the iconic Parental Advisory label on explicit music albums.
To reflect the typeface’s bold, rebellious nature, I designed a detailed editorial book with a custom dust cover that visually narrates the history and attitude of the font. The dust jacket features a stylized photo of Dr. Dre, a nod to his 1992 album The Chronic, which coincided with the typeface’s release and embodied the cultural moment Garage Gothic represents.
Throughout the design, I employed recurring ‘X’ motifs and layered text treatments to echo themes of censorship, controversy, and urban identity. This project merged historical research, cultural context, and typographic principles into a cohesive print piece that celebrates both the origin and impact of Garage Gothic.
